ID & documents
Enrol for Aadhaar (new Aadhaar, including children)
Aadhaar is a 12-digit identity number issued by UIDAI to residents. Enrolment is free and is done in person at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or an authorised enrolment centre (many banks and post offices).
Get your documents in DigiLocker
DigiLocker is the government's digital document wallet. Documents pulled from issuers (Aadhaar, driving licence, vehicle RC, CBSE/board marksheets, PAN, insurance and more) are treated as legally valid originals under the IT Rules.
Update your Aadhaar details (address, name, mobile, biometrics)
Some Aadhaar updates (such as address, or refreshing identity and address documents) can be done online on the myAadhaar portal. Mobile number, biometric, and most name, date-of-birth and gender changes need a visit to an Aadhaar centre.
Passport & travel
Apply for a new passport or renew (re-issue) your passport
Passports are issued by the Ministry of External Affairs through Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs). You apply online, book an appointment, visit the PSK with original documents, and police verification follows.
Apply for an Indian e-Visa (for foreign nationals)
Nationals of eligible countries can apply online for an e-Visa (tourist, business, medical, medical attendant, conference and other categories) and enter through designated airports and seaports.
Apply for an Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card
OCI gives foreign nationals of Indian origin (and spouses of Indian citizens/OCIs, subject to conditions) a lifelong visa to visit India, with several rights similar to NRIs. Applications are made online on the OCI services portal.
Get a passport for a child (minor)
Minors (below 18) need their own passport. Parents apply online and accompany the child to the Passport Seva Kendra. A minor's passport is usually valid for 5 years or until the child turns 18, whichever is earlier.
Get a passport urgently under Tatkal
Tatkal is a faster processing option for fresh and re-issue passports, available for an additional fee. Some categories are not eligible for Tatkal.
Get a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) for going abroad
Indian passport holders need a PCC for emigration, long-term visas, residency or jobs abroad. In India you apply through the Passport Seva portal; abroad, through the Indian embassy or consulate.
Taxes
Apply for a PAN card (or get an instant e-PAN)
The Permanent Account Number (PAN) is needed to file taxes, open bank or demat accounts and for many high-value transactions. Individuals with Aadhaar can get a free instant e-PAN from the Income Tax portal. You can also apply for a physical PAN card through Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL.
Correct or update details in your PAN / get a reprint
Changes to name, date of birth, father's name, photo or signature on your PAN, and reprints of a lost card, are done through the agency (Protean or UTIITSL) that handles PAN changes. Updates to Aadhaar-based e-PAN can also be handled on the e-filing portal.
File your income tax return (ITR)
Income tax returns are filed online on the Income Tax e-filing portal. Most data (salary TDS, interest, high-value transactions) is pre-filled from Form 26AS and the AIS. The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026 and uses a 'tax year' in place of 'previous year/assessment year'. Returns for earlier years still follow the old Act, so check the portal for the forms and due dates that apply to you.
Link your PAN with Aadhaar
Most individual PAN holders must link PAN with Aadhaar; an unlinked PAN becomes inoperative, which can block tax refunds and lead to higher TDS/TCS. Linking is done on the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Register for GST
Businesses whose aggregate turnover crosses the threshold must register for GST: generally ₹40 lakh for goods suppliers and ₹20 lakh for service providers, with lower limits in some special-category states. Some businesses (such as inter-state suppliers and e-commerce sellers) must register regardless of turnover. Registration is free and online.
Banking & pensions
Open a basic (Jan Dhan) bank account
Anyone without a bank account can open a zero-balance basic savings account under PM Jan Dhan Yojana at any bank branch or Business Correspondent (Bank Mitra). It comes with a RuPay debit card and built-in accident insurance.
Open a National Pension System (NPS) account
NPS is a voluntary, market-linked retirement savings scheme regulated by PFRDA, open to Indian citizens (and NRIs/OCIs subject to rules). You can open an account online through a Central Recordkeeping Agency's eNPS platform or at a bank or post office (Point of Presence).
Open a Sukanya Samriddhi account for your daughter
A government-backed savings account for a girl child below 10, opened by a parent or guardian at a post office or authorised bank.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recruits for the civil services, engineering, forest, defence and other Group A/B posts. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) recruits for Group B and C posts (CGL, CHSL, MTS, GD Constable and others). Both use One Time Registration (OTR) and online applications.
Find an apprenticeship
Paid apprenticeships under the Apprentices Act are available with companies and PSUs. ITI holders, school pass-outs and skill certificate holders use the Apprenticeship India portal (NAPS). Graduates and diploma holders in engineering and other streams use the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS) portal.
Get and activate your UAN (EPF account number)
The Universal Account Number (UAN) is your lifelong EPF account number across jobs. EPFO now uses Aadhaar face authentication on the UMANG app to generate and activate UANs.
Withdraw or transfer your EPF (provident fund)
EPF members can make partial withdrawals (advances) for specified purposes, settle the account on retirement or long unemployment, and transfer the balance when changing jobs. All of this can be done online on the EPFO member portal or UMANG if your UAN is linked with Aadhaar and bank details.
