Register your marriage and get a marriage certificate

Marriages are registered by state authorities (Sub-Registrar/Marriage Officer/local body) under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Special Marriage Act or state laws. Many states offer online applications through their service portals.

This service is run by state governments, so the portal and process depend on where you live. Find your state or ask below with your state name.

Steps

  1. 1

Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist marriages already solemnised: apply to the Sub-Registrar/Marriage Registrar (online in many states) and appear with witnesses

  2. 2

Special Marriage Act (any religion, or inter-faith): give notice of intended marriage to the Marriage Officer; the notice is published for 30 days, after which the marriage is solemnised and registered with three witnesses

  3. 3

Pay the state fee and collect the certificate

Documents

  • Proof of age of both spouses
  • Address proof
  • Photographs
  • Wedding invitation/photo (for already solemnised marriages)
  • IDs of witnesses
