File your income tax return (ITR)
Income tax returns are filed online on the Income Tax e-filing portal. Most data (salary TDS, interest, high-value transactions) is pre-filled from Form 26AS and the AIS. The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026 and uses a 'tax year' in place of 'previous year/assessment year'. Returns for earlier years still follow the old Act, so check the portal for the forms and due dates that apply to you.
Steps
- 1
Log in to the e-filing portal with your PAN/Aadhaar and password
- 2
Review Form 26AS, the Annual Information Statement (AIS) and the Taxpayer Information Summary for income and TDS
- 3
Choose the right ITR form (e.g. ITR-1 for many salaried individuals; ITR-2/3/4 for other income types) and the tax regime
- 4
Fill or confirm pre-filled data, claim eligible deductions, pay any tax due via e-Pay Tax, and submit
- 5
E-verify the return within 30 days (Aadhaar OTP, net banking or bank/demat EVC); an unverified return is treated as not filed
- 6
Track refund status on the portal
