Register a birth and get a birth certificate

Births must be registered with the local Registrar (municipality/gram panchayat) under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act. Since the 2023 amendment, the birth certificate is the key document to prove date and place of birth for things like school admission, Aadhaar and passports.

This service is run by state governments, so the portal and process depend on where you live. Find your state or ask below with your state name.

Steps

  1. 1

For hospital births, the hospital reports the birth to the Registrar; for home births, the head of household reports it

  2. 2

Register within 21 days to get a free registration; delayed registration needs extra steps (affidavit/permission and a late fee)

  3. 3

Apply for or download the birth certificate from the Civil Registration System (CRS) portal or your state/municipal portal

  4. 4

The child's name can be added later within the time allowed; contact the Registrar

Documents

  • Hospital discharge/birth report
  • Parents' ID proof
  • Address proof
