Register a death and get a death certificate

Deaths must be reported to the local Registrar. The death certificate is needed for insurance claims, pensions, property transfer (mutation), bank accounts and closing records.

This service is run by state governments, so the portal and process depend on where you live. Find your state or ask below with your state name.

Steps

  1. 1

Hospitals report deaths in their premises; for deaths at home, a family member reports it to the Registrar (municipality/gram panchayat)

  2. 2

Register within 21 days to avoid late-registration formalities

  3. 3

Get the certificate from the Registrar or download it from the CRS/state portal

  4. 4

Use it to claim insurance (e.g. PMJJBY/PMSBY), family pension, the NSAP family benefit, EPF/NPS settlement and property mutation

Documents

  • Medical certificate of cause of death (if issued)
  • ID of the deceased
  • Informant's ID
